| Facts about Rzeszow - heritage The 3rd May Street (Pedestrian Precinct) “Paniaga”, as that is the name used for the street by the older inhabitants of Rzeszów, failed to regain its former glamour until the mid 1990’s. Before the war, 3rd May Street was a place where only exclusive shops, restaurants, and cafes were situated, and also a place where it was appropriate to appear for a walk for social reasons. For several post-war decades the authorities did not pay much attention to the condition of the street. Now, following its renovation and closing-off to traffic, it has been revived. Every day the Rzeszów promenade fills up with crowds of strollers again. A walk along 3rd May Street is a shadow of the former route connecting the Castle with the city, stretching from the Fara Tower up to Zamkowa Street, i.e. the heart of the former estate of the Dukes Lubomirski (the street was then covered with fir beams). The buildings which are situated along the street represent almost all possible architectonic styles: from Late Renaissance (The Church of the Holy Cross), and socrealism (the seat of the National Bank of Poland and “Zorza “ cinema) through to contemporary styles in architecture (the “Paniaga” department-store). “Paniaga” is the name used for the the 3rd May Street by the older inhabitants of Rzeszów |
